Motorised Rotary Base with Dual Power Supply, Variable Speed and Direction Control
Date
August 2026
Reference
This project is a fully redesigned motorised rotary base inspired by a design previously shared online. The original concept was substantially re-engineered to introduce new functionalities, improve 3D-printability, reduce manufacturing cost and ensure compatibility with the selected commercial components.
The entire assembly was modelled in 3D CAD, including both custom-printed and commercial components. The system features adjustable speed, reversible rotation and selectable 9 V battery or 12 V mains power. Rotation is driven by a 12 V, 50 RPM worm-geared motor through a 40-tooth pinion and 100-tooth internal ring gear, with the platform supported by an 8-inch aluminium Lazy Susan bearing.
A PWM controller provides speed adjustment, while DPDT ON-OFF-ON switches control rotation direction and power selection. The internal wiring was also designed and optimised in CAD to minimise cable length and make efficient use of the available space within the enclosure.
